CLEANING HOUSE

Since I’ve written a blog post about poop, I feel as though I can talk to you guys about anything. We are all family, right?

OK, so, I want to discuss with y’all a word that is even more vile and disgusting than poop. I cringe when I hear this word…the word is clean….AHHHHHHHH…UGGGHHHH!

This word and everything about it, has always been my arch nemesis… the albatross around my neck. The Great White Whale who has chomped off parts of my soul and taken it to depths so low that I am unsure it could ever be recovered?

I hated cleaning my house EVEN before my thyroid autoimmune disease; can you imagine how I feel about it now?

I have tried everything to make the process easier for me:

I’ve tried to mimic Luke Skywalker, by using “the force” to help clean my house…this method works to some extinct. My house is a sparkling show home, although, only in my imagination.

I’ve tried pretending there are little miniature parents on my shoulders yelling at me to clean. But then, I would yell back, get all stressed out and would end up running into my room crying.

I’ve tried twitching my nose like that blond chick on that 60’s and 70’s television show, but this caused me to go into a sneezing fit and then I would have to lie down.

I’ve tried to get my husband and son to do all the housework, by using hints, threats, whining, ultimatums, bribery, blackmail, coercion, flattery…oh and I did just come right out and ask once…but they see nothing wrong with our humble abode. They are perfectly OK with wallowing around in the pig sty. This does not make mamma happy and ordinarily they will try to do whatever it takes to keep mamma happy…except cleaning….well, this is where they draw the line.

Please HELP the Crazy Thyroid Lady!

Anyone have any helpful cleaning tips for this thyroid autoimmunee?

And don’t say “hire a maid” unless you are willing to donate to the Crazy Thyroid Lady cleaning fund...Tee hee

  1. I used to belong to a group called "Fly Ladies". They have a website on how to clean your whole house. It is too much for a thyroid patient to even consider, but I did learn one valuable thing from them - anything can be done for 15 minutes. Set a timer and spend 15 minutes every day on your problem area. Soon it will be gone.

  2. I no longer have a thyroid due to thyroid cancer. I hate exercise but I find it makes me feel better. I think of housework as exercise. I blast my favorite music or have the headphones on with the ipod. Then I also have certain chores my 17 year old does, but I just take on small things and don't try to do it all at once. Maybe one day I'll clean the bathroom, another day I vacuum, another day is laundry. Only two live in my house and we try to pick up after ourselves, and we only do the dishes 3 times a week. Also use paper plates when not a fancy meal. Just work on your house in pieces. The activity will help you gain more energy.

  4. I haven't really got much in the way of pearls of wisdom but can share your pain - cleaning is such a thankless task, a simple obstruction to getting any writing done. I have quite a lot of learning to do so I do record it and play it through head phones when I clean, particularly when I hoover for some reason. The multi-tasking does help because the time spent doesn't seem quite so futile. Good luck!

  5. I made myself a chore list. I know it sounds like a chore, but my house is hardly ever dirty and I actually invite people in now. The list is up on my pinterest at http://pinterest.com/mrshandea/ under a board called "Cherise" (don't ask). I follow it and I've had success and some days I take off, but I do have it hanging up on my refrigerator, so if I'm having a bad day, then usually someone will pick up the slack.

I have Hashi's, so I hardly ever want to do much, but it has to be done...right?
